I wrote my first book, The Oxygen Mask Rule - How My Battle with Anorexia Taught Me to Survive, to help myself and others living with eating disorders. I wrote my second book, Giving Paws - Having a Service Dog for a Hidden Disability because I got tired of being asked, “Why do you need a service dog? What’s wrong with you??”
My inspiration to write The Rug Dealer, my newest book, came as a complete surprise. After graduating from high school, I spent the summer as an exchange student in central Turkey, where I fell under the spell of a charming, young rug merchant and became obsessed with him and his country. When he broke my heart, I had to figure out how to get on with my life.
For decades I believed I’d let go of my infatuation with the Turk, but in 2017 I got an unexpected phone call that revealed I hadn’t. In order to process all my suppressed guilt, shame, and heartbreak, I excavated my memories and wrote this book.
